In the previous report of《The Icons》, we noted that more than 200,000 preterm babies are born every year in Uganda! Isabelle Furaha, the Founder of Mama Tulia, explained the difficulties the organization faced as it strives to support preterm babies and mothers, and how to improve the survival rate of preterm babies through material and psychosocial support.
Most of the mothers Mama Tulia helps are from a background of poverty, several had previously suffered abuse, including rape, and under age (usually teenage girls) pregnancy, Isabelle emphasizes that “Men’s Care” is the crucial key to resolve these problems.
“Pregnant and newly delivered mothers need love and care from their spouses the most.”
Isabelle wished to tell the men from all over the world through《The Icons》 “Men rise up! Your wife needs you!”
Rise up, Take responsibility!
“Where are the men when so many women need help ?” the reporter from《The Icons》asked Isabelle.
Isabelle said with a smile: ” Many men don’t know their wives need them the most when they are pregnant or delivering, especially when they have a preterm baby, so they don’t give their wives adequate support.”
A marriage is for two people to take care of each other until they grow old; a pregnant woman has difficulty walking; newly delivered women are usually very weak; mothers who give birth to preemies have both mental and physical stress and exhaustion hence they need the support of everyone, especially their spouses.
“Many mothers feel overwhelmed after giving birth to preterm babies and at that moment, the person who can comfort them and give them hope is their spouse.”
Men fight for moms and preemies!
“Are there any men in the organization?”《The Icons》reporter asked.
“Of course! My husband is a member of the organization. In addition, many men who agree with our approach have also joined us.”
Isabelle said that this is a good phenomenon. Although the organization lacks funds, many men were willing to join them to help moms and preemies after being through their wives’ delivery. Mama Tulia also participated through courses and activities for men to do their part.
“This world needs men and women to take care of each other and also needs more NGO like Mama Tulia. In this way, there will be more couples supporting each other and more healthy babies in the future.”
As everyone together helps preterm babies and mothers, it shows that Uganda has taken the first step towards change, and this step is getting closer to changing the world.
