Prof. Huey-Jen Su: The World Is More than Just the East and West!

As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, it is vital to adopt a global perspective. Whether for the younger generation or nation-states themselves, developing a global view is essential to navigate the complex challenges of today’s world.

In a recent interview,《NCKU Tops THE Impact Rankings! Dr. Huey-Jen Su: Quality education is all about positioning》, Prof. Huey-Jen Su, former president of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), discussed the impact of quality education on the young generation and the world. In a follow-up interview with《The Icons》, Prof. Su shared profound insights into why a global view is indispensable for individuals and countries alike.

Regarding the younger generation, Prof. Su emphasized the importance of embracing technology, sustainable values, and diverse business models. She encouraged young people to consider how they can make a positive impact on the world and gain international exposure.

“Regardless of the future nature of the world economy, they must make an effort to participate in cross-border contributions,” Prof. Su noted. (photo by Dr.Su)

“Regardless of the future nature of the world economy, they must make an effort to participate in cross-border contributions,” Prof. Su noted. “This is the only way they can remain competitive and bring about positive change.”

Regarding nation-states, Prof. Su stressed the significance of participating in global events and promoting their contributions to the international community. As an example, she cited Taiwan’s efforts to assist newly arrived residents in assimilating to their new country and educating their subsequent generations.

Prof. Su also highlighted the importance of preserving cultural heritage and refugee rights while reminding Western countries that the world extends beyond the Western Hemisphere. “We must inform the world of our unique Austronesian culture and its paramount importance to the world.” she said.

During her presidency at NCKU, Prof. Su has been committed to promoting collaboration between scholars, teachers, students, universities, and Taiwan with the world, especially in the practice of the United Nations SDGs indicators.

NCKU, which has ranked first in Taiwan in terms of world university influence for many consecutive years, has in-depth cooperation with several international organizations. In 2021, NCKU initiated research on sustainable issues in Asia and secured support from the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN) to establish the WUN Global Research Group – SDGs in Asia. The team successfully connected 58 scholars from four continents to offer solutions for Asia’s most pressing sustainability goals.

“From participating in sustainable issues to putting them into practice, literacy and competency are crucial for cultivating a global vision and solving various problems faced by all human beings in the world.”

“No country can solve these problems alone.” Prof. Su said.
