Celxpert Battery Module Factory has officially passed the greenhouse gas near-term reduction target verification of the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), an authoritative international organization on climate change. This demonstrates their commitment to climate change and the protection of natural resources.

In an interview with “The Icons” magazine, Deputy General Manager Serena Huang  pointed out that as one of the top three battery module manufacturers in Taiwan, Celxpert has set science-based carbon reduction targets. The company has set a goal to reduce Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 42% and Scope 3 carbon emissions from purchased goods and services by 25% by 2030, using 2021 as the baseline year.

Serena Huang stated that to achieve these carbon reduction targets, the company has committed to the RE100 goal, aiming to achieve 100% use of renewable energy at its Taiwan locations by 2035 and globally by 2040. With the guidance of Yan-Hao Chen, the director of Taiwan Institute of Economic Research, and Wen-Jie Zhong, the CEO of Changfeng Green Energy Technology, Celxpert has successfully passed the SBTi’s target conformity review.

Promoting the Introduction of Renewable Energy, Participating in SBTi

Deputy General Manager Serena Huang who leads the company’s internal auditing team, stated, “This is another proactive commitment following Celxpert’s third-party verification of its product carbon footprint by TÜV Rheinland, directly responding to the United Nations IPCC’s global warming control target of 1.5°C and the carbon reduction pathway towards achieving global net-zero climate goals.”

Celxpert’s Chairman, Serena Huang, also mentioned that environmental
sustainability has always been a core issue for the company, which has devoted more time in recent years to tracking international standards, such as participating in SBTi, because “customers are expected to have demands on the company”:

“We are committed to providing high-quality, high-efficiency products while being fully aware of our responsibility not to develop at the expense of the environment. Over the past two years, we have successfully initiated the carbon auditing and disclosure required for SBTi application. We have now successfully identified the hotspots of greenhouse gas emissions and are promoting the introduction of renewable energy, such as installing solar power generation systems at our Kunshan plant, demonstrating our determination to reduce carbon emissions.”

Serena Huang also added that Celxpert’s own operational carbon emissions fall into Scope 1 (direct greenhouse gas emissions) and Scope 2 (indirect energy emissions), which account for 6% and 94% respectively. The primary source of emissions comes from purchased electricity in Scope 2. To effectively promote carbon reduction in Scope 2, Celxpert has set autonomous energy-saving mid-to-long-term goals, with quarterly energy-saving target review meetings. Scope 3 (other indirect emissions) mainly comes from the procurement of raw materials and services, accounting for 78% of the overall Scope 3 emissions.

“To achieve carbon reduction goals, Celxpert will introduce sustainable supply chain management, set annual carbon reduction targets, and build a carbon emission database through the Bill of Materials (BOM), targeting high-emission suppliers for negotiations. This includes promoting carbon auditing, autonomous energy saving, group purchasing of green electricity, circular economy, and selecting low-carbon, lightweight raw materials/auxiliary materials. Green product design will be incorporated, integrating the concept of green design into the product life cycle.”

Serena Huang: Integrating the Upstream and Downstream Value Chain, Collaborating for Net-Zero Transformation

Serena Huang mentioned that the three main directions, including “recyclability and ease of disassembly,” “low pollution (toxicity),” and “energy and resource conservation,” all effectively reduce carbon emissions from raw material procurement, achieving the SBTi carbon reduction targets.

Yan-Hao Chen, the director of the Institute of Economics at the Taiwan Economic Research Institute, who assisted with this project, also stated that during this process, it was evident that Celxpert’s leadership showed a determination to embrace challenges. Furthermore, it was observed that Celxpert members participating in the program, as well as colleagues from the Taiwan Economic Research Institute, have begun to internalize the concept of “net-zero transformation.” This is the most gratifying and ideal outcome following corporate consultancy and guidance, with internal staff accumulating practical experience to become a driving force towards net-zero.

Serena Huang also mentioned that Celxpert will continue to adhere to the company’s management philosophy of “integrity and pragmatism, innovation and excellence, quality assurance,” implement ESG (Environmental Sustainability, Social Responsibility, and Corporate Governance Actions), and strive to achieve the international initiatives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), RE100, and SBTi carbon reduction targets.

“Through our environmental policy aimed at sustainable development goals, we demonstrate our determination to respond to climate change and energy and carbon reduction, thereby achieving carbon neutrality goals. In the future, we hope to actively address the challenges of climate change by integrating the strengths of upstream and downstream value chain partners, gradually realizing the net-zero target by 2050.”
