Jrue Holiday, starting guard for the Boston Celtics in the NBA, is a basketball star known for his indomitable defense on the court, his deep love for family and sense of social responsibility off the court. He consistently proves the belief that “family and society come before basketball” through his actions.

In 2016, when Holiday’s wife Lauren was found to have a tumor in her brain during pregnancy, requiring careful medical attention and family care, he didn’t hesitate to take leave from the remaining games of his contract’s final year, prioritizing family over his professional career.

“My family is more important than basketball.” Holiday said.

In 2021, when Hurricane Ida struck New Orleans, Holiday actively rallied former teammates to donate to disaster relief efforts and donated $500,000 to historically black colleges and universities to support educational equality.

Birth of the JLH Fund: Transition from the Basketball Court to Social Justice

In 2020, facing the severe impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the racial unrest sparked by the “Black Lives Matter” movement, Holiday felt that basketball, once his passion, seemed to lose its meaning in his life. After a serious discussion with his wife Lauren, he decided to donate his entire salary from the NBA “Bubble” season. This fund not only became his motivation to continue playing but also laid the foundation for the JLH Fund. (Jrue and Lauren Holiday Social Justice Impact Fund)

The purpose of establishing this fund is to promote racial equality and economic justice by funding businesses and organizations founded by Black entrepreneurs. According to a survey by Intuit QuickBooks, 57% of Black business owners reported being denied a loan at least once, compared to 37% of white business owners in similar situations. Additionally, Black entrepreneurs face higher startup costs than their white counterparts, with a difference of about $5,000. Data from nonprofit financial funds also show that white-led nonprofit organizations are more likely to receive corporate donations than those led by people of color.

The strategy of the JLH Fund not only involves providing financial support but also includes education, training, and industry cooperation to expand the influence and capabilities of supported organizations. The Holiday couple actively participates in the daily operations of the fund and assists in fundraising and business expansion through their personal networks. Their efforts have helped numerous startup projects and nonprofits, including a vegan cookie brand and a health beverage company.

“We’re not just giving fish; we’re also providing more fishing rods to expand their skills and resource networks, inspiring and sparking more ideas.” Holiday mentioned.

Harnessing Personal Influence for Positive and Far-reaching Impact on Society

The actions of the Holiday couple have attracted the attention and emulation of other athletes, forming a wave of support within the sports community for social enterprises and philanthropic activities. The JLH Venture Fund is not just a financial investment but also a force for social change, promoting economic and social diversity and equality by supporting Black entrepreneurs and organizations that struggle to access traditional financing channels.

Through these efforts, Jrue and Lauren Holiday have demonstrated a new possibility: that athletes can be significant agents of social change. Their story proves that everyone has the ability to contribute to society in their own way, and when that ability is used for good, the positive impact can be enormous and far-reaching. The JLH Venture Fund and its underlying spirit will continue to inspire more people to engage in social welfare, contributing to the construction of a better society through tangible actions.

“In our efforts to assist marginalized and minority communities in accessing the funds, guidance, and resources they need for survival, we have witnessed the urgent support needed by small business owners and community changemakers. After seeing the changes in people’s lives brought about by the JLH Fund, our commitment to giving our utmost has become even stronger!”
