AI reaches multiple goals of the UN 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs). If AI is so useful, how should we use AI help with the environment?
During the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas,《The Icons》 interviewed Taylor Dutton, Business Development Manager of Stone Soup Tech. Understanding how their product: Digital Dryads, reaches the ESG.
AI systems save the forest!
“Digital Dryads uses our proprietary AI and machine learning to stop illegal deforestation in Romania. It is currently in use by the Romanian government and we are in talks with the Ghana forestry commission to get it set up there as well.”
Taylor indicated that by using satellite imaging, they can analyze where logging is taking place, then with Digital Dryads tied into local security cameras allow them both manually and automatically scan logging trucks to determine where they are coming from by direction, who is driving the truck by license plate, and the volume of timber harvested by AI scanning.
“This way if you have a permit and are going over your harvest limit or if you have no permit at all, we are able to catch you. This has commercial applications as well, since normally you would have to count and calculate the volume of lumber harvested by hand, this allows companies to automate the process and unload their timber much faster.”
AI not only helps humans, but also protects forests, which is in line with the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) goal 12th: Responsible Consumption and Production; goal 15th: Life on Land; making the Earth a more Sustainable Environment .
